Join Outrigger to Recycle Your Old Athletic Shoes

April 3rd, 2009

By Nancy Daniels — Don’t toss those old, worn-out athletic shoes in the garbage. Put them to good use and recycle them!

Every year, across the globe, millions of pairs of athletic shoes end up in landfills or are disposed of in some other way. That’s a lot of shoes going to waste! But they don’t have to. This month, Outrigger Enterprises Group is once again teaming up with Niketown, Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann, and other local businesses in the Nike Reuse-A-Shoe program.

The Outrigger ‘ohana can be part of this effort by turning in your used athletic shoes — any brand — at the OHANA Waikiki East or Embassy Suites® - Waikiki Beach Walk® hotels now through April 26. Special bins have been placed in the Housekeeping department at both hotels for the shoes. Just stop by and drop them off.

On Sunday, April 26, the shoes will be transported to Niketown in Waikiki where, between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., the public is invited to drop off their own used shoes and join the fun. There will be free refreshments from Jamba Juice and an education booth where you can learn how the shoes are recycled. If you don’t have the time to enjoy the festivities, you can use the convenient drive through on Kalaimoku Street that day to drop off any last-minute donations.

Get a head start on your spring cleaning! If you’ve got old athletic shoes that have lost their luster, put them to good use in the Nike Reuse-A-Shoe program. There are just a few guidelines:

• Athletic shoes only (any brand)
• No shoes containing metal
• No cleats or dress shoes
• No wet or damp shoes
