King Kamehameha I (1758 -1819)

On June 11th of each year, we celebrate one of Hawai‘i’s greatest ruling chiefs, Kamehameha I.
Kamehameha was born at Kokoiki in the Kohala district of the island of Hawai‘i about 1758. His birth name was Pai‘ea, and he was the son of Chief Keouakupuapaikalaninui and Chiefess Keku‘iāpoiwa. The young Pai‘ea’s early years were spent in the care of Nae‘ole, a nobleman from Kohala, and he was later raised in the courts of ruling chiefs Alapa‘inui and Kalani‘ōpu‘u of Hawai‘i Island where he became an adept warrior and intelligent leader.
