Innovations and Revolutions in Education

BY DR. RICHARD KELLEY — Very recently, I had the opportunity to attend a seminar and presentation by Salman “Sal” Kahn, a 35-year old Bangladeshi-American who, almost singlehandedly, is turning the world of education upside down. By creating new concepts and technology that can be brought to classrooms almost anywhere in the world, he is causing everyone, including Outrigger Enterprises Group, to re-examine how we transmit and acquire the knowledge and skills that are so vital in today’s fast-moving global economy. Way Above the Fold

BY DAN WACKSMAN — The Term “Above the Fold” comes from the newspaper industry. In order to sell newspapers, the most compelling stories and pictures are put on the front page above where the paper is folded, so everyone can see it on the newsstand.  This term has also come to the digital world where “Above the Fold” means everything that you see on your screen without scrolling.  So this column, which we hope to bring to you monthly, will aim to focus on digital issues that are “Above the Fold.” Read the rest of this entry

Groundhog Day!

By Chad Teramae

As we prepare for six more weeks of winter, The Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach, Outrigger Reef on the Beach and Holiday Inn® Waikiki Beachcomber were pleased to host students from Waipahu High School’s (WHS) Academy of Hospitality and Tourism. A total of six students, either in their junior and senior year, were chosen to participate in the WHS annual Groundhog Day shadowing program. Chosen by the Director/Instructor Todd Nakayama to participate in this all-day event held at different hotel properties, students were given the opportunity to experience and learn the day-to-day operations of a hotel and get a glimpse of what it’s like to work in the hospitality industry. The positive experiences in this program have resulted in many students choosing the hospitality industry as their career of choice!
