During the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Kelley family watched the action from the top floor of their home on Kuhio Avenue
Tomorrow, December 7, is a very significant day, as it marks the 67th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. One week later, December 14, marks the 36th running of the Honolulu Marathon. These two events have had a profound effect on my life and probably the lives of many members of our ‘ohana living or working in Hawaii. On December 7, 1941, my sisters, Jean and Pat, and I were just kids living with our parents Roy and Estelle
Kelley in a home on Kuhio Avenue in Waikiki. We were driven to church by our father but were picked up again a few minutes later when it became clear that Pearl Harbor and, indeed, the whole island of Oahu were under attack.
I have previously described our Pearl Harbor experiences for Saturday Briefing readers. A particularly complete accounting can be found in the article I wrote for the 60th anniversary of the attack in 2001. It is available at www.outrigger.com/aboutus_saturday_briefing_articles.aspx?article=684§ion=19.
