BY PATSY NARIMATSU — We scored a full house at the Outrigger Reef’s Diamond Head Ballroom on Tuesday, February 7, for the “Call the Coach” radio broadcast featuring new University of Hawai‘i Head Football Coach Norm Chow. Fans enjoyed bentos, beverages and each other’s company as they chatted with excitement about the upcoming UH football season. Some wore “Chow Time” T-shirts to welcome the native-born son back to Hawai‘i after an illustrious career as college and professional football coach on the Mainland.
Coach Chow assumed the UH position in December 2011. He previously held the offensive coordinator position for the Utah Utes, UCLA Bruins, NFL Tennessee Titans, USC Trojans, NC State Wolfpack and BYU Cougars.
Sports radio station ESPN1420 has joined Outrigger Reef on the Beach for the past two years in presenting Tuesday evening live remotes from Kani Ka Pila Grille during the football, basketball and volleyball season seasons. Moderated by sports announcer Bobby Curran, UH coaches review and preview games, answer fan questions and award prizes such as UH logo items. The radio broadcast and live-stream on the Internet reaches a wide local and global audience to give Outrigger Reef favorable promotional media exposure.
We’re pleased to have “Call the Coach” on-site during the sports season and welcome fans to join us for upcoming shows with UH Volleyball Coach Charlie Wade on February 21 and March 13; and UH Basketball Coach Gib Arnold on February 28, 6 p.m.
