Fiji fundraiser gives kids a chance

BY DONNA PARKIN — A new carpentry workshop at Sigatoka Special School funded by an Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort walkathon will help students pursue their vocational dreams. The workshop was opened by Regional Education Officer Setareki Rika who said the school’s students were special and had a unique way of learning. He thanked Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort for funding the project through its annual Outrigger ‘Walk for Kids’ walkathon.

Mr. Rika said the school’s new workshop was part of an education inclusiveness program with Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort. “Thanks to this partnership with Outrigger, this is the beginning of a new journey for children who face more challenges than other kids,” he said.

Resort General Manager Peter Hopgood said his mother had been a special education teacher and he understood the needs of the special school students. “Our staff and management are committed to the local community. We are determined to make our province a better place for all Fijians,” he said.

Peter said he and his staff are busy preparing for the next Outrigger Fiji Walk for Kids fundraiser April 8.
