Ten hula halau gathered on Saturday, November 22, in the Royal Gardens at Keauhou Beach Resort to celebrate the 2nd Annual E Mau Ana Ka Hula (The Hula is Perpetuated) — a tribute to King David Kalakaua. Kumu Keala Ching organized an incredible event with 175 students and teachers, representing various island halau participating. Each group performed a hula to honor King David Kalakaua, who is referred to as “the Merrie Monarch” because of his love of the joyful elements of life. The King was also credited with reviving hula, which had been banned by Queen Kaahumanu in 1830.
The event was a great way to educate the community and guests about the different style and traditions of hula. Through culture-rich festivals like this, hula can be shared and enjoyed by all. The celebration also included eight arts and crafts tables for guests to enjoy, along with food booths. This free event attracted a spectacular turnout of a few hundred guests and locals.
Many thanks to Kumu Ching, all of the participating halau and teachers, Valery O’Brien, and the entire ‘ohana at Keauhou Beach Resort who made this special event possible.
