BY DEBBIE MURAKAMI AND LUANA MAITLAND — Outrigger Hotels and Resorts ushered in the Year of the Horse on Feb. 8 with performances and activities throughout Waikīkī.
At the Holiday Inn® Waikiki Beachcomber Resort (OBC)a lion dance performance and cultural activities took place. Guests and staff gathered to sample Chinese sweets, purchase fai chun (lucky red paper) and discover their Chinese zodiac fortune for 2014. At 10 a.m., drums and cymbals of the Chinese Lion Dance Association sounded the beginning of the performance on Kalākaua Avenue. After exciting the crowd with acrobatic movements in OBC’s porte cochere, the lions proceeded up the escalator to bless the front desk and back offices, then on to Island Jewelry, Margaritaville, Honolulu Surf Museum, Jimmy Buffett’s, the Magic of Polynesia box office, Expedia and Macy’s.
The Chinese Lion Dance Association continued on to the Outrigger Reef on the Beach with blessings of good fortune.
Mahalo to Simeon Miranda and the hard working OBC staff, the Chinese Lion Dance Association, Andy Chan from Island Jewelry and all the tenants that participated. Special thanks to volunteers Masako Sawyer, Taryn Wong, Virginia Asakawa, Evelyn Garcia, Teri Takahashi and children Kylie and Teron, Natalie Caceres and daughter Anaia, Jennifer Frias and daughters Rorie and Rachel and Parker Murakami.
