BY KATHY HANSBERRY — Hundreds of runners turned up for the 9th annual Paul Mitchell XTERRA Trail Run World Championship Sunday, Dec. 4, 2016, at the majestic trails of Kualoa Ranch on O‘ahu’s North Shore.
The XTERRA Trail Run World Championship is the final race of the trail run series held all across the United States as well as in exotic international destinations like Australia, Costa Rica, New Zealand, Malaysia, Japan, Greece, Spain, Ireland, Canada, Sweden, Denmark and Italy, to name just a few.
With various race distances from 5K, 10K and 21K (half-marathon) and exotic race destinations, XTERRA Trail Runs have gained in popularity year after year.
As official hotel partner, Outrigger hosts were on hand to welcome keiki to the Outrigger Keiki Fun Zone and award an “Outrigger Keiki Champion” medal to each finisher of the Kid’s Race (2-12 years). Each keiki who received a medal also received a free shaved iced courtesy of Outrigger Hotels and Resorts. In addition, guests at the Outrigger Hospitality Pavilion were able to make their own kukui nut bracelet, a sampling of Outrigger’s new Signature Experience.
Congratulations to all of the finishers including some of our very own runners from #teamOutrigger. Special congratulations to first place male Joe Gray from Colorado Springs, Colorado, who finished the grueling half-marathon course in 1:17:15 and female finisher Polina Carlson from Kailua, Hawai‘i, who cruised to victory in 1:38:06.
Mahalo to our wonderful #teamOutrigger hosts who volunteered their time at the Outrigger Keiki Fun Zone and Hospitality Pavilion: Thaila Lagunero and her husband Jimmy, Dan Wacksman, Gay Shinbara, Debbie Hendrawidjaja and her husband Jeff Vierra.
Mark your calendar for next year’s race, Sunday, Dec. 3, 2017.
