BY MARK SIMMONS — Outrigger was well represented at ITB Berlin, which took place in the German capital March 4-6. We had our own Outrigger Resorts booth in Hall 26B of the largest travel industry tradeshow in the world.
In fact, Outrigger was in three locations during the show. Apple Woo (DOSM) and Pascal Billon (GM) of the new Outrigger Konotta Maldives Resort, had a space in the Maldives booth in Hall 5.2A, and Frederick Chelin (DOSM) and Thierry Ng (ADOS) represented the Outrigger Mauritius Beach Resort in the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority stand in Hall 20.
A key objective was to build awareness in the major German-speaking and key European markets of our new property in the beautiful Maldives. The steady flow of travel industry professionals and media to our booth were also interested in product updates and the 2015/16 rate directions at our properties from Mauritius to Hawai‘i, from Fiji to Thailand.
We held a well-attended cocktail reception at the main Outrigger booth at the end of opening day. Before and during ITB we used Twitter (@OutriggerMV) for the first time at a tradeshow to build awareness of our new Maldives property and invite journalists and travel partners to visit the booth – which they did.
Outrigger also held meetings with senior officials from the ministries of tourism from Mauritius, Maldives and the Seychelles. We said “Bula” to our Fijian friends at a Fiji reception on day two of ITB.
Media interest was good. We gave face-to-face updates on Outrigger to senior journalists from HOTELS, HM magazine, TravelWeekly Asia, TTG Asia and TravAlliance Media. Many German bloggers dropped by the booth, alerted by our Twitter campaign.
Just prior to ITB Berlin, Darren Edmonstone and myself were present at the International Hotel Investment Forum 2015 in Berlin as well.
The global nature and presence of the Outrigger brand was apparent at ITB. We had our own representatives there from Russia, France, UK, Germany, Thailand and Hawai‘i.
The priority now is all about the follow-up to all those important meetings we held at ITB – vital as we work hard to build the brand globally and become recognised as the premier beachfront resort brand in the world.
Thank you to all the following attendees who worked hard to make ITB Berlin 2015 a success on site: Pascal Billon, Jenny Bychkova, Rory Campbell, Frederick Chelin, Anabela Dos Santos, Darren Edmonstone, Ian Griffiths, Bitsy Kelley, John Limper, Thierry Ng, Ken Scott, May Sunthonpraphat, Marie Vesterling and Apple Woo.
And a big thank you to Wiparat Phupongphiphat (Bam) in our Asia-Pacific office in Phuket for confirming appointments and stand preparations over many months to make ITB Berlin 2015 a success for Outrigger. Auf Wiedersehen, Berlin, until we meet again.
