I join Human Resources in congratulating Eric Masutomi on his promotion to Vice President of Planning. Eric has earned this promotion with his work in recent years in the areas of land use planning and entitlements. He has been primarily involved in our important Waikiki Beach Walk project over the past few years and has demonstrated a keen ability to get things done.
Eric will continue to oversee the planning and development of the real estate assets of the Outrigger group of companies, including the 12 hotels the company owns in Waikiki, as well as the $300 million Waikiki Beach Walk development project.
Eric is well suited to his position with over 20 years of experience in land use planning and development in Hawaii. He spent ten of those years as a Senior Planner with the Hawaii State Department of Planning and Economic Development. In 1987, he joined the Governor’s Office of State Planning where he headed a strategic planning team specializing in community development activities, including the State’s ambitious program for the revitalization of the Honolulu Waterfront — a program that resulted in such projects as the Ke’ehi Lagoon Canoe Racing Complex, the Kaka’ako Waterfront Park, The Children’s Discovery Center and the Aloha Tower Marketplace.
Prior to his joining Outrigger in 1995, Eric served as the Director of Planning for the Hawaii Community Development Authority, the state agency responsible for the development of Oahu’s Kaka’ako district.
With all that Eric is involved in here at Outrigger, he still finds the time to participate in a number of industry and community organizations. He is a member of the Land Use Research Foundation of Hawaii, the Native Hawaiian Tourism & Hospitality Association and the American Planning Association. He serves as Chairman of the Waikiki Business Improvement District Association and President of the Greater East Honolulu Community Alliance. He also serves on the boards of the Historic Hawai’i Foundation and the Waikiki Improvement Association, and is a member of the Professional Council of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, University of Hawaii at Manoa.
Born and raised in Honolulu, Eric graduated from Roosevelt High School and received his bachelor’s degree in Urban and Regional Design from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
