Castaway Island, Fiji, guests go for gold in Olympic celebrations

BY DONNA PARKIN — Fiji won its first-ever Olympic gold medal in Rio de Janeiro when its Men’s Rugby Sevens team defeated Great Britain. Castaway Island, Fiji, celebrated this historic victory in style.

There were mini-Olympics on the beach with guests registering to compete for gold in a relay race, kayaking, swimming, tug-of-war and beach volleyball.

A barbecue buffet lunch was followed by a mini-Olympic tennis contest and touch football on the beach.

In the evening, a presentation ceremony was staged by the light of a bonfire for gold-medal guests.

Fiji has competed in every Summer Olympics held for the past 60 years, making the Rugby Sevens medal a cause for a national celebration.
