BY DONNA PARKIN — Castaway Island, Fiji hosts gathered on the beach and sang a traditional farewell song to Chef De Partie Rohit Vishal Singh as he left the island to represent Fiji in a regional chefs challenge in Auckland, New Zealand, this week.
Fiji Chefs Association President Shailesh Naidu said Rohit would be competing against chefs from Vanuatu, Cook Islands, Guam, Australia and New Zealand. “The winners will then go and compete at the Global Chefs’ Challenge in Greece. We are looking forward to this challenge. We want to give the other participants a good run for their money,” he said.
Rohit said that he always wanted to be in a profession where the learning never stops so he chose the culinary world. He said, “I love a challenge and look forward to the contest in New Zealand.”
Rohit, 23, won the Fiji Pastry Chef of the Year 2014 award. He graduated with a Trade Diploma in Culinary Arts from Fiji National University, has been with Castaway Island for the past two years and hopes to one day become an executive chef.
Castaway Island General Manager Steven Andrews said that this trip to New Zealand is Rohit’s first time overseas. “The Castaway team gave him a huge beach send-off. We are proud of his achievements and advised him to enjoy the experience and do his best. If he returns with a medal, it will be a bonus,” he said.
