BY BARRY WALLACE — I am pleased to join Human Resources in announcing Dean Nakasone as the general manager (GM) of the Outrigger Reef on the Beach, effective Nov. 1, 2013.
Dean has an extensive background in hotel management with Outrigger. As general manager, Dean transitioned the Waikiki Beachcomber Hotel to the OHANA brand in 2005 and then to the Holiday Inn® brand in 2010. Prior to the Waikiki Beachcomber, Dean was director of sales & marketing for OHANA® Hotels and Resorts and previous to that, director of revenue management. Dean joined the Outrigger family in 1997 as general manager of the Outrigger Prince Kuhio Hotel.
An Outrigger career highlight was Dean’s successful management of a significant renovation to the OHANA Waikiki Beachcomber, including collaborating closely with a major tenant to open a multi-million dollar restaurant. Dean and his team were able to reposition the property to a 4-star hotel.
Many of you may not know that early in his career, Dean was a lecturer on front office operations and the foundations of guest service in the Food Service & Hospitality Education Department at Kapi‘olani Community College.
He is an O‘ahu chapter chair of the Hawai‘i Lodging & Tourism Association and an advisory board member of the School of Travel Industry Management (TIM), University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. Dean currently serves on the TIM Curriculum Committee working closely with the DOE Career and Technical Education Center.
Dean holds a Bachelor’s in Business Administration from the TIM School and is a TIM International award recipient. He is also a Japanese Studies graduate of the International Christian University in Tokyo, Japan.
Dean and his wife Holly have been married 32 years and have an adult son and daughter; “man’s best friend” rounds out the Nakasone household. When time permits, Dean enjoys playing a round of golf with friends.
Congratulations and well-deserved, Dean!
