BY DARREN EDMONSTONE AND SEAN DEE — We are delighted to join Human Resources (HR) in announcing the promotion of Alan Darr to vice president, human resources and support, Asia Pacific; welcoming Elza Artiaga to the Outrigger ‘ohana as resort manager for the Outrigger Konotta Maldives Resort; and congratulating Pam Cabrera on her new role as director of military affairs. All three positions took effect Jan. 1, 2016.
Alan joined Outrigger in July 2014 and has been key in providing the strategic planning, direction and administration of the human resources function for the Asia-Pacific region including staffing and recruitment, human resources administration, recognition and motivation, benefits, compensation and payroll, and implementation of global HR initiatives, programs and policies in partnership with Honolulu.
He came to Outrigger from Artyzen Hospitality in Hong Kong where he served as a human resources consultant. Previously, he worked with Shangri-La Hotels, first as director of resourcing and organizational development and then as vice president of human resources. Prior to Shangri-La, Alan held roles with Genworth Financial as an HR manager for Southern Europe and also London. He originally came to Europe while working with Intercontinental Hotels (IHG), which is where he began his career in hospitality HR. Alan worked for IHG for almost nine years and held various roles located in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina; Atlanta, Georgia; and London serving as employee relations specialist, HR business partner for North America and director of HR for UK/Europe, respectively.
Alan holds a Master of Science degree in human resources from Central Michigan University and a Bachelor of Science degree from North Carolina State University. He and his wife Sandy have been married 16 years and are the parents of Aidan (8) and Genevieve (6). They also have a 13-year-old rescue dog, Scrabble.
Alan enjoys trail running and has participated in ultra-marathons (events longer than a marathon) in Hong Kong, China, Mongolia and Borneo. Congratulations, Alan, on this well-deserved promotion to vice president.
Elza reports to Outrigger Konotta Maldives Resort General Manager Pascal Billon and brings to Outrigger valuable experience in running tropical beach resorts in exotic locations, most recently as general manager of the Coco Palm, a 4.5-star resort in the Maldives with 98 villas. Prior to that she was the executive assistant manager (EAM) at the 82-suite Carlisle Bay Resort in Antigua in the Caribbean.
A U.S. national, educated in Miami, Elza also had a 12-year period with Ritz Carlton in Miami and Chicago performing as front officer manager, director of rooms division and rising to become EAM of the Ritz Carlton Hotel and Resort Palm Beach, a 5-star hotel with 310 guest rooms.
She speaks, reads and writes English, Spanish and Portuguese and has a working knowledge of Italian. Elza says, “I grew up in the hospitality business in Miami. Both of my parents always worked in hotels, so that is how I developed my passion for team development and delivering world-class customer service wowing my guests.”
Her travel ambition is to visit Zimbabwe on a volunteering holiday. The public figure who inspires her most is Nelson Mandela. Two pieces of advice that have been the most useful to her are: You can’t judge a book by its cover, and, if your dreams don’t scare you, they’re not big enough.
Pam reports to Tom Wakita, area director of sales and is the liaison for Outrigger and the military on a social and community engagement level and also provides resort accommodations, reservations and corporate support. Her role is to secure military business for Outrigger Hotels and Resorts and its brands including sales and revenue strategies for significant military events like RIMPAC and Pearl Harbor’s 75th Anniversary.
She steps into the incredibly big shoes left by Mildred Courtney who retired from the company last week yet continues to be part of the ‘ohana. Mildred has had a decades-long commitment and made unparalleled contribution to Hawai‘i’s military families and to the growth and reputation of our company. Pam is uniquely qualified to continue to lead this critical channel for Outrigger with her experience in sales and marketing, operations and through her direct involvement in many of Mildred’s efforts, the introductions and resulting relationships she has formed with Hawai‘i’s military leadership.
Most recently director of sales and marketing for Hawaii Vacation Condos by Outrigger®, Pam previous to that was general manager at the Outrigger Luana Waikiki. She is a success story of our student intern program having worked through the Outrigger system in various capacities to her new role today.
She holds a BA in psychology from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.
Pam shares that the center of her life are her children, son Cole (16) and stepdaughter Olivia (10); husband Ryan rounds out her family. Outside of family, Pam enjoys flipping through fashion magazines, shopping and watching reality TV, mainly Vanderpump Rules. She also enjoys watching UH sports, traveling to her vacation home in Las Vegas and other favorite mainland destinations and spending time with Cole on baseball trips to various colleges.
We look forward to maintaining our key relationships with senior leadership in all branches of the military and know Pam is perfect for the job.
A new year and a fresh and exciting start for Alan, Elza and Pam—Congratulations!
