BY MANNY NICOLAS –Recently, Alakai Amante Castro wrote about our 2016 kickoff for Paddle 1. The motivation to reinforce our values continued with Ao, to learn and share, and Na Mea Hookipa, host. This time bell desk hosts expressed their appreciation to our housekeeping department.
Knowing that our housekeepers come in early, I made sure to bring Chinese pastries and manapua from Ami’s in Chinatown by 7 a.m. so they could enjoy them before their workday began.
Lead Alakai Amante Castro opened the morning briefing with a reintroduction of the two values and then introduced bellman, Troy Boyce, who shared, “Thank you for all your hard work. You know we cannot do anything without housekeeping. You are the most important department in the hotel and we appreciate everything you do. Without you, the hotel cannot function properly. That is why you are so important. I see how you interact with our guests when I am delivering bags on the floors, and how appreciative the guests are in turn. That is what being a host and sharing is all about.”
Although unable to attend the briefing, bellman Peter Nonales wrote a note that was shared with those in attendance: “I thank housekeeping for rushing in and making the rooms clean so we can deliver bags early for our Japanese guests. If the bags are delivered early, the guests are happy. I also thank Divina [Garcia] and Primie [Marzan] for the outstanding job they do.” He also shared a quote:
A customer is the most important visitor on our premises.
He is not dependent on us. We are dependent on him.
He is not an interruption to our work. He is the purpose of it.
He is not an outsider in our business. He is part of it.
We are not doing a favor by serving him. He is doing us a favor by giving us an opportunity to do so.
I expressed my personal thanks to our housekeeping department and presented a slideshow of happy and delightful faces enjoying and sharing as they work together. We then parted ways to start our workday – grateful for another beautiful day in Hawaii nei.
