January

  • Peter Hopgood was named the General Manager of Outrigger on the Lagoon – Fiji.
  • The OHANA Waikiki East bid a fond aloha to Yuk Hong Lee, who retired after 21 years of dedicated service.
  • Teri Orton assumed the position of Vice President, Condominium Resort Marketing, TJ Oesterling was named General Manager of The Kapalua Villas, and Dina McCallion was appointed as Director of Sales – Maui.
  • Lauren Cole was recognized for being the first graduate of Australia’s Outrigger Academy, an affiliate of Outrigger University.
  • All 12 staff from Outrigger on the Lagoon – Fiji won medals in the Fiji Salon Culinaire Awards, including Aruna Devi who won a gold medal for her sensational curry dish.
  • Outrigger employees were honored at the 20th annual Hawaii Hotel & Lodging Association’s Na Po‘e Pa‘ahana Awards ceremony.
  • Outrigger honored its Employees of the Quarter for the Fourth Quarter 2009.
  • The Outrigger Guam Resort, OHANA Oceanview Guam, and the OHANA Bayview Guam introduced the concept of CARE:  Create A Remarkable Experience at their quarterly celebration.
  • Darren Shaw was appointed as General Manager of Outrigger Laguna Phuket Resort & Villas in Thailand.

  • Taxes on travelers to Honolulu are not low, contrary to the headline on eTurboNews stating “Report ranks Honolulu tax burden for travelers lowest.” He further pointed out that Hawaii’s GET is in reality a tax on a tax which he summarized as a “sneak attax.”
  • A special blessing and festive luncheon was held to celebrate the official welcome of The Kapalua Villas to the Outrigger ‘ohana.
  • Fond memories were shared about Ray Kanemori, a 36-year veteran of Outrigger, who passed away after an unfortunate accident.
  • The success story about veteran hotelier Mike Leven, President and Chief Operating Officer of the Las Vegas Sands Corporation, which owns and operates the Venetian in Las Vegas, Nevada. The main reason for the stay at the Venetian was to celebrate Max Sword’s marriage to Mona Wood.

  • David Carey presented the manifesto of three former governors and Governor Lingle’s State of the State address calling for major changes in public education. He summarized that we need to let our legislators know we support making the governor and principals accountable and to give children more time in the classroom.
  • The OHANA Waikiki Beachcomber gathered to bid aloha to Monica Padunan, who retired after 22 years of dedicated service.
  • David Carey stressed the importance of aggressively marketing Hawai‘i to maintain our fair share of business, which will in turn bolster the economy and boost tax revenue.
  • Outrigger Twin Towns Resort employees created “Our Family Wall,” to learn more about each other and to develop a stronger bond within their ‘ohana.
  • Outrigger on the Lagoon – Fiji held their monthly recognition and awards ceremony and shared their yearly tradition of the Outrigger Community Bula Spirit with the less fortunate.

  • President Obama’s statements discouraging group travel and the negative repercussions it has had on the travel industry and the millions of people who work in the industry.
  • That both he and Dr. Chuck Kelley have dyslexia and how one out of every five people have some form of this condition.

  • Fourteen employees were honored for the 2009 Po‘okela Excellence in Leadership Awards.
  • Outrigger on the Lagoon – Fiji received awards for the Best Deluxe Accommodation and the highly coveted Frontliner of the Year award.
  • Dr. Chuck Kelley highlighted how the Outrigger team did an outstanding job on the day the tsunami was to have hit the islands.
  • Outrigger presented three Excellence in Safety Awards for the First Quarter.
  • The Outrigger Reef on the Beach donated $300 to the USO Hawaii from coins collected from their “wishing well.”
  • Employees from the Outrigger on the Lagoon – Fiji held a special celebration for their ongoing commitment to the community and also presented employee awards for February.
  • Dr. Chuck Kelley pointed out that the language in the Health Care Reform Bill is not clearly written which poses difficulties for people who are asked to provide opinions about the bill.
  • Outrigger honored twelve Supervisors who received their Certified Hospitality Supervisor (CHS) designation and one Supervisor who received her Certified Front Desk Manager (CFDM) designation from the American Hotel and Lodging Association (AHLA).
  • The Outrigger on the Lagoon – Fiji announced the launch of their new Meimei Nanny Service April 1.
  • Outstanding employees from Kaua‘i were recognized and honored at the Hawai‘i Hotel & Lodging Association’s Kaua‘i Chapter 13th Annual Mālama Awards.

  • The Outrigger ‘ohana paid tribute to Marie Casciato,  Dr. Kelley’s Personal Assistant and Saturday Briefing Editor, who passed away unexpectedly.
  • The ramifications if the “Obamacare” bill is passed and how important it is for us to let our Congressional Senators and Representatives know our feelings about this matter.
  • The positive impact to Hawai‘i’s economy from students who came for vacation during the spring break.

  • The solutions to our budget crisis by doing the right thing and getting serious about cutting expenses rather than raising taxes or raiding special purpose funds.
  • The history of Outrigger entertainment under the leadership of Fran Kirk and the announcement that World Class Entertainment would be the new producer for the Main Showroom of the Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach.
  • How the Travel and Tourism industry is particularly susceptible to disruptions, such as natural disasters, and mentioned the extraordinary performance by our employees in response to the tsunami that was have to hit Hawaii in February. He also congratulated the employees of the First Quarter.

  • A Loco Moco Smack Down event was held to kick off the best Loco Moco contest at Waikiki Beach Walk®, plus a few neighboring eateries.
  • The First Annual Hawai‘i Steel Guitar Festival was held at Waikiki Beach Walk® with free seminars on the history of the Hawaiian Steel Guitar and how to build one.

  • His trip to China and how things have changed since the last time he was there 20 years ago.
  • How Outrigger will be active in the growth of China’s hotel industry and Southeast Asia.

  • His trip to the Cheyenne Frontier Days in Wyoming and how the community was involved. The locals there say its “the Cheyenne thing to do,” but he said that it’s another way of saying “Tourism Is Everybody’s Business!”

  • The ‘ohana from the Outrigger Waikiki and OHANA Waikiki Malia completed Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training, qualifying them to help save and sustain lives following a disaster until help arrives.

  • Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Australia signed a Memorandum of Understanding to manage two new waterfront resorts located at the Port of Airlie at Airlie Beach in North Queensland.
  • Many of our Supervisors and Managers completed Outrigger’s Management Fundamentals training program after a lot of hard work and intense studying.
  • The Rainbow Warriors claimed the 47th Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic title!
  • Chef Glenn Galligan and the Embassy Team dished it up at the KCC Farmers’ Market.
