BY DONNA PARKIN — The memory of a great travel industry mate who passed away suddenly from cancer early this year motivated Andrew Gee, regional director of sales and marketing Australia and New Zealand, over the finishing stages of his half marathon run in Sydney on May 17.

Andrew ran in the 21km half marathon, his first, to raise funds for the Can Too community that supports early career researchers through Cure Cancer Australia.

“I completed the challenge. I ran the Sydney Morning Herald Half Marathon in a time of 2 hours and 14 minutes – which was far faster than I expected. Actually my goal was to just finish!” said an elated Andrew. “For me, it was at times a tough race. The mind plays tricks on you when you are pounding away on the pavement, but over the last 8 kms I received some amazing inspiration from the Can Too supporters on the course shouting “Go Can Too, Go Andrew.”

“Seeing my family along the course holding a sign encouraging me also kept me motivated for the last 3km along with the memory of my mate’s very sad, unexpected death in January,” he said.

Andrew says he was exhausted by the time he crossed the finish line but managed to make it to the recommended afternoon rehydration recovery session at Sydney’s Manly Wharf Hotel Bar.

Congratulations, Andrew!
